BODY BODY

  • BODY BODY was a personal project with 2 goals in mind. One, to address contemporary gender issues, primarily those faced by the LGBTQ and transgender community. And two, to raise money for an organization within the local community that helps to support those very people.

  • A series of limited edition silk screen prints created to be auctioned, with all proceeds benefitting QMUNITY, BC’s Queer Resource Centre. Along with live performances by iconic Vancouver pin-up Jovainka, musical selections by DJ’s Jay Douglas and Bradenjonestown, as well as the debut of a video piece by Dave Shortt of Shortt and Epic.

Aside from creating an successful & original event we wanted to recognize and show our support for all the great work QMUNITY does within the Vancouver LGBQTA community. The exhibition and performances addressed contemporary gender issues from a fresh perspective, while encouraging dialogue and providing financial support to an important community resource.

“We’re born naked, and the rest is drag.” -RuPaul
Gender, whether male or female, has become a hot issue that effects not just those pushing its boundaries, but also those that like to keep those boundaries clearly defined. Take for example Canada’s recent passport laws regarding gender, transgendered Miss Universe Canada contestant Jenna Talackova’s fight to compete, or the ongoing struggle for marriage equality in the United States. Gender is at the core of all these issues, or more specifically, the legal and/or social rights associated with one’s gender.

  • BODY BODY was a great night and took place at 1181 Davie on July 12th, 2012, raising over $1500 for QMUNITY.

This event could only have been possible with lots of help, special thanks to the following people for working together to make it a success: Jovainka, Dave Shortt, Jay Douglas, Braden Jones, Meggan Winsley, Justin Murr at Malaspina, Robin Parry at QMUNITY, Jeff Lynch, Jennifer Mickey at 1181, David & Maurizio at Debut Events, Abbas Akhavan, and Kyle Ference.

Thank you everyone for all of your hard work.
